Die Kriege in der Ukraine und im Nahen Osten sind zwar die jüngsten, aber bei weitem nicht die einzigen: Weltweit toben derzeit mehr als hundert bewaffnete Konflikte. Hunderttausende Menschen verlieren ihr Leben, mehr als 110 Millionen sind auf der Flucht. Rund 35 Millionen von ihnen sind minderjährig. Generationen sind traumatisiert und es braucht viel Zeit, bis die Gräueltaten eines Krieges aufgearbeitet werden, bis Gerechtigkeit hergestellt wird und wieder Frieden herrschen kann. Leidtragende sind immer die Schwächsten: Frauen, Kinder und ältere Menschen. Sie alle sind sehr verletzlich und brauchen besonderen Schutz. Die Verpflichtung, diesen Menschen Schutz oder Asyl zu gewähren, stellt die Künstlerin symbolisch mit der Figur der Gottesmutter Maria dar. Maria wird im Christentum als Schutzpatronin verehrt und so genannte «Schutzmantelmadonnen» finden sich in der bildenden Kunst seit dem 13. Jahrhundert. Mit dieser feministisch-pazifistischen Friedensperformance manifestiert sie gegen Machtstrukturen, Gewalt, Unterdrückung und Krieg.

The wars in Ukraine and the Middle East may be the most recent, but they are by no means the only ones: More than a hundred armed conflicts are currently raging around the world. Hundreds of thousands of people are losing their lives and more than 110 million are on the run. Around 35 million of them are minors. Generations are traumatised and it takes a long time for the atrocities of war to be dealt with, for justice to be established and for peace to prevail again. It is always the weakest who suffer: women, children and the elderly. They are all very vulnerable and need special protection. The artist symbolises the obligation to grant these people protection or asylum with the figure of Mary, the Mother of God. Mary is honoured as a patron saint in Christianity and so-called ‘protective mantle madonnas’ have been found in the visual arts since the 13th century. With this feminist-pacifist peace performance, she manifests her opposition to power structures, violence, oppression and war.
